ExamsTutor is a small Nigerian company building assessment tools for secondary schools. Viva is what we build now, and it exists because of one change nobody in Nigerian education has had time to respond to yet.
Why we built it
The problem isn’t AI. It’s the missing link.
A written submission used to carry an assumption: that the student who handed it in understood it. Generative AI removed that assumption quietly and completely, leaving schools with a marking scheme that no longer measures what it claims to.
The industry’s answer has been detection. Detectors are unreliable, they fall hardest on students who write unusually, and one wrongly accused child costs a school more than any amount of copied homework.
We also think students should use AI — it is a good tutor, and it will be part of their working lives. What has to survive is the link between the work and the understanding behind it.
Viva doesn’t catch students. It gives teachers back the evidence they used to get for free.
